OpenAI spent the week trying to control a story about their financials that leaked a few days after they confidentially filed for an IPO. Independent journalist Ed Zitron, a vocal skeptic of the AI buildout, obtained the company's audited 2025 financials, verified by the Financial Times.

First the good. Revenue more than tripled to roughly $13 billion. Though the news that everyone is talking about is the OpenAI has a net loss approaching $39 billion, including a roughly $30 billion charge that exists only because the company's own valuation keeps climbing. The figure that should worry investors is the $21 billion operating loss, with real cash burn closer to $8 billion against $25 billion in reserves. Microsoft, holder of about 27% of the company, is carrying a slice of those losses on its own books. Most of the burn traces to the compute commitments OpenAI has signed, the data-center and chip contracts, and profitability isn't expected before 2030.
